The week before the region tournament, the Fort Mill High School wrestling team had a perfect match against Fairfield Central. The Yellow Jackets won 84-0 over the Griffins. Fort Mill also defeated South Pointe, 48-19. These wins earned Fort Mill its sixth straight region title.
The Yellow Jackets had four region title winners as well. Tyler Turner won in the 103 weight class, Nick Leitten in the 140 weight class, Jonathan Miskelly in the 152 weight class and Nick Sinicrope in the 189 weight class. Thirteen of Fort Mill’s wrestlers will be heading to the individual Upper State tournament.
Head Coach, Chris Brock, mentioned that this region is the toughest in the state and is pleased that 13 of his wrestlers qualified. The 145 weight class was the only one that did not have a Fort Mill wrestler qualify for Upper State. The tournament will be held at East Side High School on February 18 and 19.
“I feel very confident that I can win state this year, and so can other Fort Mill wrestlers that qualified for the tournament,” Seth Frase, a junior, said.
The region win put Fort Mill into the state playoffs, ranked number three. Their first and only match was against number one ranked West Oak on Monday, February 7. Fort Mill was ahead until the last eight matches. The Yellow Jackets lost seven of those eight to put West Oak ahead, 33-23. Fort Mill finished the season with a 19-5 record.
