Last Saturday, October 9, the Fort Mill High School swim team swam to victory in the state meet. The girls placed third in the state and the boys were crowned State Champions.

Overall, the season for the Jackets was phenomenal. Both teams went undefeated during regular season and were awarded Region Champions. “We were expecting to podium, or place, in all our relays,” Allie Barilla, a junior, said. Although, the girls did not place as high as they wanted, some girls did get their best time of the season, and the team worked well together. If the times were faster, then the girls would have turned out better, but there is nothing wrong with a third place finish. Always cheering each other on and getting each other pumped up, the girls swim team is expecting an even stronger finish in state next year.

Our boys made us proud in Columbia last Saturday by winning the state championship by only one point over Academic Magnet. They were expecting to win bigger than that, but none the less, they received the title. Sam VanBuskirk, a junior, became a State Champion in the 200 freestyle. “Our team wanted to win so bad for our school,” VanBuskirk said. Practicing five to six times a week, the Fort Mill High School swim team did just that.

Both teams work extremely well together and are excited to continue their titles next year. Sara Weddington, the only senior on the team, will be leaving the Jackets this year, but other than that, no one else will be lost. They are already excited to represent Fort Mill next year, so be sure to congratulate both the boys’ and the girls’ swim team in their excellent finishes in Columbia.
