The power of foods

When people eat a delicious chocolate bar or drink two or three cups of coffee, it is not very likely that they know they are doing something good for their brains. There are a few certain foods that actually are healthy and good to eat that help increase a person’s brain power. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “a brain-healthy diet is one that reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes, encourages good blood flow to the brain, and is low in fat and cholesterol.”

Some of the foods that are said to help boost brain power are blackberries, chocolate and salmon. As people begin to age, it becomes more difficult for one’s mind to retain new information due to inflammation in brain cells, which blocks them from communicating with one another as needed. By eating blackberries, people can soak up more information. Blackberries offer an antioxidant known as polyphenols that can reduce inflammation and help with communication between neurons.

Chocolate has become a very popular treat for Americans over the past years. Besides its yummy taste, what else does it do for people? A study was conducted in 2009 that showed that eating one-third of an ounce of chocolate everyday helps aid against memory loss due to age. Professor Ian Macdonald also found out that chocolate can help the brain fight off fatigue, sleep deprivation and some effects of aging. The polyphenols in cocoa also help blood flow to the brain better.

What is so special about salmon? Salmon is the top source of the omega-3 fat in a person’s brain known as DHA. Omega-3 is known to protect against certain forms of disease. This fat is known to keep the cells in a human’s nervous system running smoothly, and it also has been said to reduce inflammation in the brain. Inflammation of the brain may later lead to brain disease. Omega-3 can help prevent that.

Blackberries, chocolate and salmon are not the only foods known to help boost a person’s brain power. Other foods that help the function of the brain are leafy greens such as spinach, apples, grape juice and coffee. Eating or drinking one of these foods daily may potentially help fight off diseases or other health related problems. Do the body some good, and have an apple and a hot cup of coffee for breakfast every now and then.
