Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I Review

By:  Tyler Dossett

Perhaps one of the most anticipated Harry Potter films of the whole series is finally here.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, is the beginning of the end for the last Harry Potter book in the series. The movie was definitely expected to deliver some great quality considering Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was said to be almost perfect. All films have been rather long, but this is the first one to be split into two parts because it is not only the longest book of the series, but also the very last one. In a way, it’s sad for all Harry Potter fans and actors since this is the last movie to be made, following the book series.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is very different and not like of the Harry Potter films. Instead of taking place at Hogwarts, all the characters are going off to hide from the evil Lord Voldemort and his followers. Throughout the entire film, it feels as if anything could happen at any moment. When everything seems calm and peaceful, as everyone is having a great time enjoying a wedding at the beginning of the film, Voldemort’s followers come out of nowhere and suddenly become “wedding crashers.” For most of the film, Harry, Ron and Hermione are trying to escape and survive. From taking cover and blending in with everyone in the city of London, to setting up camp in rural areas like forests covered in a blanket of snow. It definitely has its share of beautiful scenery, which can draw minds off the fact that an all out war between good and evil is taking place. The only indication of this is the radio broadcast that the three listen to, in order to stay updated.

Although all Harry Potter films have a dark side to them, there has also been a humorous side to the films. This film was dark as well, but even more so than fans are used to. It could be considered rather depressing as death plays a big role, as it did in the last Harry Potter movie. Notable to this film is the introduction of Bill Nighy, who played Davey Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean. Nighy plays the new Minister of Magic. Even though Nighy shows up in only two parts of the movie, he does more with the character than some do in the entire film. As the actors of Harry Potter grew up, their roles in the movie certainly did too. Both Harry and Hermione share a rather “romantic” scene, dancing as they struggle with the departure of their friend Ron who later returns in the movie.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 may not be the most exciting of any other Harry Potter films, but it definitely shows more in its characters, while also having plenty of unexpected scares that can make you jump out of the seat. This is a movie that cannot be missed. It leaves fans wanting more and ready for part two.

  1. Harry Potter es mi favorita pelicula.
