What is a relationship?

By: Courtney Harrington

The most important aspects of a relationship are, hands down, trust and honesty. A relationship that lacks such traits is unhealthy. Photo courtesy of Kristen Hegel

Being a high school girl myself, I know that relationships are a huge deal for a lot of students. At the beginning of my freshman year, I had already set a goal and had my eye out for my first high school relationship. Some high school students believe that being in a relationship is essential to fitting in. For those of you who whole-heartedly believe that, I am here to inform you of what a healthy relationship looks like and how to know when your relationship turns bad.

Some teenage girls think that they cannot survive without having a boy by their sides. Let me be the one to tell you that no girl needs a guy. Each and every girl atFortMillis a strong, beautiful individual and should never, for one second, think she cannot stand on her own and be happy on top of that. However, for those of you who prefer to be in a relationship, it is important that you know the difference between the right and wrong kind of relationship.

I, for one, know that it is easy to get caught up in the emotions of having a boyfriend/girlfriend. However, allowing yourself to fall for someone puts you at risk of being hurt. We all know the saying “love is blind,” and it really can be. From the bottom of my heart, I am telling each and every one of you to be careful. We are only teenagers, and I highly doubt many of us truly know what love is. However, it is extremely easy to make yourself think that you do.

The most important aspects of a relationship are, hands down, trust and honesty. A relationship that lacks such traits is unhealthy. The key to a successful relationship with someone is being able to know, without a doubt, that you can believe anything and everything he/she tells you. No healthy couple should have to question things his/her mate said. If you cannot say that you trust whoever you are dating, then you do not need to be in that relationship.

There are those few things that no girl should tolerate from her boyfriend at any point in a relationship, such as emotional and physical abuse. It is never okay for a guy to degrade a woman, and none of you should overlook such abuse. No guy is worth jeopardizing your emotional and physical health. I know from personal experience that it is still just as difficult to walk away from an unhealthy relationship. However, after time, you will most definitely be grateful for walking away from the thing that might have ruined you.

I know being in a relationship can feel really good, but you have to ask yourself: is it worth it? Nobody needs a girl/guy to be happy and to fit in. From the bottom of my heart, I am asking you to make sure your relationships are healthy and that you make the right choices when it comes to your personal happiness.
