This past week our very own Fort Mill High School Band competed in the state championship and finished with remarkable scores. The performance took place in Batesburg-Leesville on Saturday, October 30th. This competition included the17 finalist marching bands in Class 3A. Fort Mill received two awards, Best Overall Event and tied for Best Visual Performance.

The final outcome of the day was Nation Ford, 96.25, Fort Mill, 96.20. Nation Ford beat Fort Mill by five one-hundredths of a point. Blue Rights-93.00, Chapin-92.225, and last but not least Greer-91.425. Fort Mill High’s score of a 96.20 is the highest score the band has received at state finals since 2004.

Not only has the Fort Mill Band shown us how hard they work each day, but they have proven it by going to the championship. Looking at the last competition at state, where they finished first overall, and their performance this time was just as good. In addition to its 22 state championships, the Fort Mill Band has now finished in second place eight times. For 30 of the last 35 years, Fort Mill has finished first or second at the state finals.

With all the practice and time our Fort Mill High band members puts into performing and competing, you need to make sure and congratulate them on their win. The Fort Mill High School Band has proven to our town plenty of times how talented they really are. They may not have been able to take home another state title this year, but they are sure to start back the tradition next year. “I felt like the students did everything we asked, I was impressed with their performance and work ethic,” stated John Pruitt the band Director.
