Many clubs and teams here atFortMillHigh Schoolare very much underappreciated. These clubs and teams work just as hard as others but still do not receive the recognition they deserve. Clubs will most likely always be trapped under this blanket of under recognition but sports should not have to deal with this. This may just be because I am a member of this team, but dance team is one of the teams that do not get the attention it deserves. The girls on dance team work just as hard as the competing cheer, football and soccer teams, as well as the band.
14 out of 16 dance team girls dance at a private studio where we each can get the best training possible. I dance at Centerstage in Tega Cay along with six other girls from dance team and we are there almost every day of the week. Our normal schedule for studio dance consists of two hours on Monday, five hours on Wednesday, two hours on Thursday and two hours most Sundays. Along with these practices we have an hour and a half practice after school every Tuesday and Thursday. Still we have to make sure we are making good grades to be able to remain on the team, so there is also that stress being added to our week full of dance practices. What I am trying to say is that all the dance team dance about every day of the week.
Now I understand that our cheer team goes to competitions and occasionally wins and our band is quite good at competitions, but dance team competes as well! Just this past February the dance team traveled to Orlando, Floridafor the Universal Dance Association’s High School Dance Team Nationals. This competition was not just a state competition, but out of the entire nation. Although we did not win, we still places 14th and 17th out of the entire nation! Yet dance team still was not recognized by our school for this and did not receive a victory celebration welcoming us home when we returned like so many other teams have like soccer, swim, cheer, etc.
So let’s show our phenomenal dance team how much we all care by attending their upcoming events and by getting informed on what is going on with the girls. As captain of the dance team, I know and can guarantee this gesture will be greatly appreciated considering it rarely occurs.
