After a hard fought game against Fairfield Central on Senior night this past Friday, the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets’ football team came up short. The loss puts them at 0-4 in the region and eliminates them from playoff contention.
The Jackets came out hard, stopping the Griffins on their first drive with a fourth down stop. However, they were unable to capitalize on the opposing mistake and were forced to punt after three downs. Fairfield then drove down the field on the following possession, scoring on a 25 yard run by quarterback NaJahwan McKinstry. The Griffins scored again on a 15 yard run by Damian Bell after a 46 yard punt return. The Jackets climbed back in the game, however, scoring with less than a minute left in the half on a one yard run by running back Nick Raszeja. Fairfield proved to be too strong down the stretch though, eventually pulling away to win 33-14.
Although the Jackets are eliminated from playoff contention, they are going into the Nation Ford game tonight at Bob Jones stadium. With two region victories, the Falcons have already clinched their first playoff appearance with a third place finish in the region. The Falcons are coming off a 38-8 loss to York last week. With the region standings already set for both teams, the game is being played for pride alone. The Jackets have not lost to Nation Ford since the opposing school has been in existence.
On the other side of the region, York and South Pointe play tonight to decide the region champion. Both teams are undefeated and both hope to clinch a victory tonight. York coach Bobby Carroll, formerly the coach at South Pointe, said, “ We got a chance to do something York hasn’t done in a long time and that is win a region championship.” Although the Jackets have been eliminated, the region will be represented well by both of these teams in the coming AAA state playoffs.
The Nation Ford vs Fort Mill game is sure to be filled with excitement. After a hard fought season, the Jackets have come up short of their playoff hopes but they can still end with a win. Nation Ford hopes to defeat the Jackets for the first time in school history and gain some momentum going in to the playoffs. Fort Mill High School will host a game of pride tonight, and both teams will try to prove that they are the best in town.
