A South Carolina couple, Jaquin and Larialmy Allen, is one of the 11 couples on the eleventh season of The Biggest Loser, which aired this past Tuesday. Their journey on the hit television show with millions of viewers all began at a casting call. After a call from the casting director, the pair agreed to go on the show with no hesitation and began filming in September. “We had decided a couple of months before to lose weight. It was a blessing in disguise,” Larialmy said.

The Allens, who live in Columbia, are both employed at the University of South Carolina and have a three-year-old son. The 437-pound Jaquin stated, “I honestly had no idea. I really didn’t know that I had gained that much weight. I just skipped the 300’s.” His struggle began in his teens after an injury stopped him from playing football. The recent loss of a friend due to obesity complications serves as a motivation for Jaquin, “I want to be able to grow old with my wife and be an active part of my son’s life as he grows up.”

Larialmy, who weighs 300 pounds, began gaining weight when she resorted to food for comfort to deal with bullying. She continued to ignore her weight gain by steering clear of mirrors and scales. “I cut the tags out of clothes so I didn’t know how big they were,” she stated. When going up the stairs became a strenuous activity, she knew her weight was becoming a serious issue. Larialmy’s is shedding the pounds in order to be able to have more kids down the road, and to do that she needs to lose weight to lower the risks. Also, a family member of hers weighs 600 pounds, “I have to be an example. I can’t let myself get back into bad habits. There are so many people in my family that are overweight and morbidly obese. I’m trying to break that cycle.”

Dropping the pounds may be difficult, but the trainers on The Biggest Loser, Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels, have tough workouts designed for the contestants. Besides a demanding schedule of exercise and dieting, the contestants are informed about healthy eating habits and nutrition. “It’s about changing your life,” Larialmy said. Tune into NBC on Tuesday nights at 8 P.M. to watch the Allen couple loose weight and begin their healthy lifestyle.
