The Jump N’ Java Cafe on Hwy. 160 West is much more than just a coffee shop. This restaurant, owned by Jane Walters, originated as a booth at the Southern Christmas Show in Charlotte. The cafe was opened by Walters’ late husband, Doug, and has become a successful business with very close customer relationships.

The restaurant, which has some customers who attend so regularly that they have their own seats in the cafe, attributes its success to being one of very few in the area where workers know many of their customers by name. Serving full breakfasts, specialty drinks and gourmet lunches that are all completely homemade “makes us unique,” said Wendy Shugart, Jump N’ Java’s manager. According to Walters, staying health conscious is a priority.

Along with being a sit-down restaurant, Jump N’ Java also features drive-through service, caters a variety of events, rents out its facility and makes party platters. The cafe gives back to the community as well. In December 2007, Walters established a scholarship in her late husband’s name that can be awarded to culinary students at both Fort Mill and Nation Ford High Schools.

In addition to hosting wine tastings, Jump N’ Java also will be catering an event for Nation Ford High this month and will be sponsoring a gingerbread house contest beginning Dec. 13. Judges will include the mayor and a former contestant from “Hell’s Kitchen.”

“I’d really just like to thank everyone for supporting us the last ten years,” Walters said about her café, which she calls “one of Fort Mill’s best-kept secrets.” Hopefully this restaurant will have many more anniversaries to celebrate in the future.
