As we all know, last Monday was Labor Day, and for some of us that means all of our white clothes are already packed away until Memorial Day comes around again next year. No one knows where the Memorial Day to Labor Day rule for wearing white orignated. However, we do know that for girls in the South, this rule is just as crucial as using the right fork at the dinner table. Studies show that women in the South follow the rule of not wearing any white after Labor Day more strictly then women in any other part of the world.

The old-fashioned rule states that no white clothing or accessories should be worn before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. However, could the fashion police have been wrong all along? At the top of the “what not to wear list” are white pants, white shoes, and white purses, with winter white items and white athletic shoes being the only exceptions.

Fashion experts agree that it is time to move on from this rule, and that wearing white after Labor Day is perfectly acceptable. However, they also agree that the key to wearing white year-round is being able to coordinate it into outfits fit for the season. For example, in the fall, try something like white capris with a black shirt or jacket, or even a dark turtle neck with a white coat. Just save the bright bold colors for the summer time.

Wearing white may seem simple, however, there are plenty of unknown rules that come along with it. One example is wearing white to a wedding, which is a definite no. `Leave the white for the bride, and when it comes to weddings stick to more natural colors such as light purple or any other pastel colors. Another rule is wearing white sandals or heels with white stockings.

Needless to say the tradition of not wearing white after Labor Day has been broken, and just because the seasons are changing, does not mean the inside of your closet should too. So, keep out those favorite white pants or your trendy white flats and continue to wear them year round because a new tradition is just getting started.
