The Carolina Panthers have a new quarterback, but will that be enough to help them this season? Just a new QB is not the only change for the Panthers this season. The NFL is requiring all teams to cut their 75 player roster to just 53 before the actual season begins. In pre-season games, the Panthers are 1-2. They defeated the Tennessee Titans, but lost to the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets. Last pre-season, the Panthers were 0-4.

Matt Moore is the new starting quarterback for the team. He has played for the Panthers for four years. Last season, he played in seven games. In the final five games, the only ones he started, Moore threw eight touchdowns and only one interception, as well as completing 79 of 128 passes for a total of 990 yards. In those five games, the Panthers had a 4-1 record. Moore threw one more interception and completed six of 12 passes for 63 yards in the games he filled in for Jake Delhomme.

The Panthers played the Pittsburg Steelers on Thursday, September 2. The Steelers were 2-1 for pre-season games before playing the Pnathers. They have won against the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants. The Steelers won the game, 19-3. During the game, none of the Panthers’ starting players hit the field. This Saturday, 22 players will be cut from the roster. The coaches played the second and third string players to see who would be getting cut.

When asked about the game, Moore replied, “We got ready to play all week, but that’s OK. We’ve got a more important game coming up next Sunday, and they will start counting for real. That’s what our focus is now.”   The Panthers play the New York Giants on September 12, at New York, to start the regular NFL season. The Giants were 2-2 for pre-season play. The game will be on FOX at 1:00 pm. Panthers’ fans are anxious to see if Moore will lead the team to a victory or if he will turn out to be just another Delhomme.
